Naturally smart

A raw material may be biodegradable, but that doesn’t actually say anything about its origin. The biodegradable property is due to the molecular structure of the biopolymer, which decomposes in specific conditions. Microorganisms split the organic compounds, causing the material to break down until nothing is left except water and CO2.

The microorganisms are therefore responsible for clearing up the material. Naturally smart! The result of biodegradation: no waste, and a solution to several sustainability issues. Let’s look at cultivation, for example. What happens when a plug reaches the end of its useful life? Reuse is not an option... but because Nygaia is biodegradable, you don’t have to deal with the residues. These can easily be composted and put at the service of Mother Nature again.

Controlling decomposition

You obviously don't want a substrate to lose its physical characteristics and structure when a crop has only half grown. Decomposition has to be controlled. The Nygaia recipe is formulated to ensure that the substrate only decomposes at temperatures of 50 ˚C or higher, which are typically achieved in an industrial composting facility. This keeps the plug stable during cultivation. It retains its shape and structure for as long as necessary, before being disposed of in the green (organic waste) bin when no longer needed. Zero waste.

Partially biobased

Many of the biopolymers we use in Nygaia are biobased, meaning they come from a natural source. These are extracted from maize, cassava, or sugar cane waste. This raw material is therefore completely non-fossil, which is reflected in a smaller environmental footprint and completes the circle.

Our ultimate goal is to supply a 100%-biobased substrate someday, but this is not yet possible because we prioritise biodegradation. However, we’re continually refining our product and searching for the best, most sustainable raw materials.

Certification

Independent institutes investigated Nygaia's sustainable character. They endorsed it through awarding the OK INDUSTRIAL Compost and OK Biobased ** certificates.
